An Update on Asunción

The world premiere of Asunción will not move forward as planned in July. This decision was made after careful consideration, with LBO deeply respecting the artists involved and their creative process.

A new event will take place on the originally scheduled dates, for which tickets will be transferred accordingly and/or appropriate refunds will be issued. Current ticket holders will be notified by email. More details to follow.

Asunción Story

Step into the vibrant world of San Cha, where cultures collide in a breathtaking fusion of heritage, pop culture, and Latin influences. Her journey, spanning from the serene ranches of Jalisco to the vibrant queer clubs of San Francisco, serves as the mesmerizing backdrop for her debut opera, commissioned by Long Beach Opera.

Prepare to be captivated by the tale of Dolores, a modest flower picker on a serene hacienda. Her life takes a dramatic turn as love and obsession intertwine, leading her to a divine connection with Esperanza. Inspired by San Cha's album, La Luz de la Esperanza, librettist and director McCall Cadenas weaves this enchanting story into a world premiere production in the heart of Los Angeles. Join us on Dolores's heart-wrenching journey, where choices will shape her destiny.

I love the suffering for romance, and the tragedy that comes with it. It’s very much like a telenovela, like ‘Without you I won’t be able to breathe. I’ll drown in misery.’ The drama, she says with a laugh, is ‘what I’m all about.’

Long Beach Opera proudly joins forces with the Latino Theater Company and East LA Creative to breathe life into ASUNCIÓN. This dynamic partnership celebrates Latin culture, embraces diversity, and spotlights San Cha's brilliant vision. Prepare for an extraordinary fusion of music, culture, and storytelling, all coming to life in the vibrant city of Los Angeles in July 2024.
