The Feast Reviews & Press
-
"A sudden view of the colors, low lighting, and banquet finery took one's breath away. Elegant tables were set with the riches of a true FEAST!"
-
"Carlis Shane Clark ... led a processional including the entire audience from the garden, across Anton Boulevard — Costa Mesa police running a brief traffic break — and into the intimate Samueli Theater."
-
"Breaking barriers and innovating surprises have long been LBO specialties. This mash-up of Ancient World icons ... was certainly one of its most successful experiments."
The Feast Impact
In its remarkable collaboration with the Martha Graham Dance Company, LBO presented THE FEAST, a mesmerizing dance ritual and baroque banquet. James Darrah had ingeniously reinvented the baroque pastiche, weaving together vocal and instrumental melodies from George Frideric Handel's operas, including the seldom-heard Alessandro, to create a sensory overload of both literal and figurative proportions.
The evening began with a tantalizing introduction of cocktails and activated performance spaces, setting the stage for what would become an extraordinary experience. As the night unfolded, audiences were led by the Graham Company into a breathtaking setting where they found themselves savoring not only gourmet cuisine but also live music and dance performances that entirely immersed and transformed the banquet's proceedings, leaving everyone awestruck.
At the heart of THE FEAST was the superstar Polish countertenor, Jakub Józef Orlinski, whose presence elevated the event to celestial heights. Making his Southern California debut, Orlinski not only sang but also graced the stage with his graceful dance moves, performing alongside the Martha Graham Dance Company for the very first time. The Graham Company's choreography activated the location in ways that paid homage to Graham's profound connection to Greek ritual, mythology, and the transformative power of dance and early music.
THE FEAST left a lasting impression, redefining the boundaries of artistic expression and taking attendees on an unforgettable journey through time and emotion.
Presented in partnership with Elizabeth Segerstrom and the Henry T. & Elizabeth Segerstrom Foundation.

“Following tradition and available repertoire, most countertenors focus on early music, with occasional forays into contemporary repertoire. But, as with so much else, Orlinski is reluctant to follow the formulas.” —Andrew Dickson, The New York Times
