Renowned choreographer and dancer Chris Emile, previously recognized for his groundbreaking choreography in LES INFANTS TERRIBLES (2021) at LBO, returned to live performance with an intimate new work. This performance masterfully merged Emile's exceptional movement direction with operatic ritual, promising a captivating experience.

Audiences were invited to immerse themselves in a meditative and captivating experience driven by a raucous and irreverent original score and soundscape by Cody Perkins, accompanied by astonishing vocals from the cross-genre performer Alexis Vaughn.

Titled THE HORSE, the performance delved into the supernatural realm of spiritual possession, drawing from the Vodun tradition. It explored the concept of a "horse," a person who had been possessed and "ridden" by a divine entity. By fusing somatic practice with theology and delving into the origins of ballet, Emile redefined the role of the performer/dancer in traditional balletic training. The resulting work embodied ancestral wisdom, paid homage to African religions, and celebrated the profound connection between the human and the divine. All were invited to witness and partake in this shared catharsis.

Prior to the performance, attendees had the opportunity to explore an accompanying installation adjacent to the historic Rancho Los Cerritos. This sanctuary-like installation featured a documentary short chronicling Emile's research and creative journey in crafting THE HORSE. It also showcased an assemblage of various found and collected materials that served as the wellspring of inspiration for the performance. Additionally, an altar was provided, where visitors were encouraged to contribute their own offerings in remembrance of loved ones past.

Chris Emile, based in Los Angeles, is an active director, choreographer, educator, and performer. He received his dance education from luminaries like Lula Washington and Karen McDonald, and he held a BFA in Dance from the Alonzo King LINES Ballet/Dominican University BFA program. As a dancer, Chris had graced the stages of renowned companies, performing the works of esteemed choreographers such as Nacho Duato, Idan Sharabi, and Barak Marshall.
